Motion Picture Strategy

As the first research firm to take movie testing from the malls to the Internet, Penn Schoen Berland is leading the research revolution in Hollywood.  By bringing the advanced methods of messaging, targeting and competitive testing from politics to Hollywood, PSB emphasizes strategy over “testing”.

Our innovative process offers several advantages over the typical industry methods:

Instead of creating traditional 4-quad positioning strategies, we have revolutionized moviegoer targeting by using both scripts and trailers to identify target and swing groups for each film.  Script-based strategic positioning tests enable studios to develop initial an strategy and trailer framework while trailer benchmark tests help inform TV campaign strategy.
Instead of straight numbers testing, we go further by employing a campaign management perspective—uncovering swing “persuadables”, designing targeted messages for key segments, and focusing on beating the competition.
PSB has the largest online normative database and we have distinguished ourselves as the leader in long-lead opening weekend box office forecasting.  Our ability to predict a film’s opening weekend gross up to 8 weeks before release enables studios to make adjustments to the marketing mix before release and optimize their TV campaign for maximum effect.

PSB’s dedicated Motion Picture research team utilizes the latest statistical tools to augment our findings and help us to uncover new insights.  Our work includes script-based positioning, segmentation and Micro-Targeting, creative testing, competitive release testing and long-lead forecasting.
